Proper preparation for the reception of the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion is our goal at the Church of St. Patrick. Typically, this period of instruction begins with formation in the First Grade and continues throughout the Second Grade. Students enrolled in Second Grade Family Formation are automatically enrolled in sacramental preparation.
If your child is older when entering faith formation classes, one full year of instruction is still required prior to receiving the first sacraments. For these special circumstances, please contact our formation advisors for more information.
During the second year of Family Formation instruction, parents will be provided with a materials packet for preparation for the sacrament of First Reconciliation. Throughout the winter semester, each family will complete several home lessons. Those home lessons are supplemented by classroom instruction designed to enhance the child’s understanding of the sacrament and prepare them for a lifelong reception of grace. First Reconciliation is always to be made prior to First Communion.
Following the sacrament of First Reconciliation, the spring semester will be dedicated to preparation for the sacrament of First Communion. At this time, parents are provided with a second Family Formation (Link) materials packet that is designed to help their child learn about the Eucharist. Classroom instruction transitions to a focus on First Communion and instruction includes a parent and child retreat designed to develop a deeper understanding of the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. First Communion will be received in the spring.
Enrollment in the sacramental preparation program is included in the registration for Family Formation. Be sure to indicate your interest in this program on the Family Formation registration form. This is a two-year program. There is no additional fee.
